Caol Ila Distillery
Caol Ila (pronounced Cull Eela) is on the North East Coast , along with Ardnahoe and Bunnahabhain. n 1846, Glasgow distillery owner Hector Henderson picked a little bay on the Sound of Islay for his distillery site. He named it for the sound itself, using the Gaelic Caol Ila, and it was across this sound the little puffer ships made their round trips to the mainland – slowly helping to establish the distillery as the biggest on Islay. Caol lla is currently closed due to construction- we look forward to welcoming you back to our renovated brand, in the meantime our sister distillery Lagavulin has reopened where you can sample Caol Ila. The Lagavulin team are all very excited to welcome our guests back and have been working hard to ensure the safety of our visitors, employees and local community, following government guidelines. Booking is by appointment only so please reach out to the team by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Advanced booking is essential.
Kilchomen Farm Distillery
Kilchomen is Islays smallest independant farm distillery. It is located between Loch Gorm and Machir Bay and just to the south of Sanaig, which just happen to be the names of the core range of whiskies produced, along with the extra special 100% Islay. Kilchomen has a large new visitor centre and a cafe which serves Tea, Coffee, snacks and Lunches.
Situated in a small bay near the south coast of Islay near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle, Lagavulin Distillery is thought to be one of the longest established distilleries in the country.
Laphroaig, pronouned la-FROYG is probably one of the best known distilleries on Islay. The Gaelic name means "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay". Laphroaig is considered one of the most strongly flavored of all scotch whiskies, and is generally aged to 10 years. The 18 year old variety is also very popular as well as the Quarter Cask (matured in small casks often used in the 19th century)
